World's Biggest Beaver Dam

Beaver dams are among the few animal-made structures visible from space. A Canadian ecologist has discovered the world's largest beaver dam in a remote area of northern Alberta. The dam on the southern edge of Wood Buffalo National Park is about 850 meters long. The dam stretches more than eight football fields long. It's common for beaver dams in Canada to reach 500 meters in length.

Biologists estimate the dam would have taken at least 20 years to build. It is visible in NASA satellite imagery from 1990.
