Planning a Long Distance Move

Moving may not be the most fun experience for the whole family but embracing it with proper planning will help the process become bearable.

It was not too long ago when we moved and believe me it was a lot of work for me. I did the packing myself and it took me days before everything was packed. When the day came for us to move, it was another tedious job as I need to unpack everything and arrange all the things that we have including the furniture. It was not the best moving experience for me but it was my first and it was a learning experience.

For a better and smooth-sailing moving experience, you can learn from these tips:

  1. Start early - give enough time to pack, chances are you have more stuff than you think you have. Pack ahead. Anything that you can pack ahead will save you time on the day you will move.

  2. Change of address - file your change of address a month before you move. Notify your accountant, attorney, doctors, dentist, sitter, family, friends and other important individuals on your move.

  3. Hire the Best - when you hire long distance movers, choose the best. Choose the movers that are licensed, bonded and insured. Don't rely on the lowest price as it may indicate a desperate mover. Get referrals from friends and family who just recently moved.

  4. Safeguard your valuables - keep your valuable possessions with you. Make a room in your car for your valuables. This also goes to all your important papers like birth certificates, school records, bank records, phone lists and other important papers.

  5. Moving Day - start early even before the movers come. If you have a kid, let a sitter take care of them as you need full attention in moving. Be sure to get the cellphone number of the driver and have directions and map from your old place to the new place ready.

  6. Unpacking - same with packing, plan ahead which to unpack first. Prioritize rooms and set an objection or time frame to finish unpacking.
